Nusa Penida’s Dive Sites

Top Locations For Diving

📌 Manta Point

This is probably the most famous dive site in Nusa Penida, located on the south coast. Year round we can see the charismatic and inquisitive manta rays here. There are two types of mata in the world; Oceanic and Reef mantas. Here we have the incredible Reef Mantas. The dive site consists of a slope with a low lying coral reef that drops off to a sandy bottom. There is no current here, although sometimes with a little surge (small waves), it makes for a very easy dive. The best chances to see a huge number of mantas are from June - September where we can see ‘mating trains’; a line of males chasing after a large female at the front. We can also see them ‘barrel rolling’, (doing a loop-the-loop) to filter as much water through their gills to feed. To encounter a manta ray is a breathtaking moment. No matter how many times you see one, they have so much personality, each time is a magical encounter. Here we also have the chance to see bamboo sharks, blue spotted stingrays, eagle rays, octopus and rare nudibranchs.

Did you know?

Mantas are some of the largest animals in the ocean! They can weigh as much as 1,350 kg (3,000 lb) and have wingspans of up to 7 m (23 ft).
They belong to the shark family, but do not fear! These are the most gentle creatures who wouldn’t hurt a fly, since they only eat plankton!
A manta can never stop swimming from the moment it’s born until the moment it dies! Mantas have to swim constantly to stay alive – the forward movement flushes water over their gills so they can breathe and feed.
The name “manta” comes from the Spanish word meaning “mantle” or “cloak”…and it’s easy to see why :)

📌 Crystal Bay

Crystal Bay is a very popular dive site on the west coast.
With a sandy bottom in the centre of the bay, flanked by two beautiful coral gardens either side. This is the place divers come to spot the weird and wonderful mola mola (sunfish) which can be as big as a small car!
Mola-Mola live most of their lives in very deep and cold water.
Mostly from June to August when the cold water rises, these shy creatures come up to be cleaned by cleaner fish.
Molas do not have scales but skin, that can be three inches thick in some areas!
Cleaner fish eat the parasites from the mola’s skin as it hovers patiently in the water column.
We can see an abundance of reef fish such as parrotfish, angelfish, clownfish, a variety of triggerfish, scorpionfish, stone fish, flounders, trumpetfish, sweetlips, batfish, seahorses and so much more!

📌 The North Coast

It is possible to dive all along the north coast. We can have gentle currents or exhilarating drift dives depending on the conditions. There are a number of amazing dives sites such as: Sekolah Dasar (SD), Sental, Ped, Buyuk, Sampalan. One dive site runs into the next. Depending on the drift you might descend in Buyuk and surface in Ped! All of these sites follow a wall of dense coral, varying in gradient along the way. You will zip over an abundance of coral and sponge species, feeling at one with the abundant reef fish buzzing around you. There’s always the chance to see sharks as well as rare finds like frogfish and rare nudibranchs.

📌 Toyapakeh

You could never have imagined when getting off the boat in Toyapakeh harbour that right there, under the surface, is an unimaginably beautiful dive site. The coral here is incredibly healthy with not a single patch of white. There’s even chances to see mola mola here from June to September. Visibility here can often be crystal clear, hich just amplifies the colours all around. Be on the lookout for ribbon eels and in crevices look out for the huge bobbing head of a giant moray eel! Most often it is a drift dive but depending on the conditions, may also have little to no current.

📌 Ceningan Wall

Nusa Ceningan is the tiny island between Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. The channel between the two islands is more than 180 meters deep! The vertical wall with normally crystal clarity is a sight to behold! Currents here can be strong and unpredictable and that’s why it’s only suitable for experienced divers. We can see all types of reef fish here as well as it being a haven for nudis that cling onto the coral encrusted wall. This is a lesser known dive site that when the conditions are right, take the chance to experience this gem of a site.
