Tips for First-Time Snorkelers

✨ We recommend you bring some sort of closed bathing suit such as a rash guard. This is because a couple of times a year there can be little pink jellyfish that can cause a bit of an itchy sting. So if you do see the jellyfish, you can put it on and of course it’s also great sun protection!
✨ Don't touch the coral — it's a living organism and even a light touch can cause damage.
✨ Use reef-safe sunscreen — chemical sunscreens harm marine ecosystems. Opt for mineral-based SPF.
✨ Wear a rash guard — it protects against sunburn and jellyfish stings.
✨ Stay close to your guide — currents can be unpredictable, especially at Manta Point and SD Point.
✨ Go in the morning — calmer seas and better light for underwater visibility.
✨ Stay hydrated — sun and saltwater are exhausting. Drink water between spots.

FAQ

Snorkeling in Nusa Penida FAQ

Everything you need to know about snorkeling with manta rays in Nusa Penida — locations, safety, what to expect, and how to book.

Manta Rays & Locations
Where can I snorkel with manta rays in Nusa Penida?
Depending on the selected package and sea conditions, manta ray snorkeling trips in Nusa Penida go to Manta Point or Manta Bay, often with additional reef stops at Gamat Bay, Crystal Bay, or Wall Point. Manta Point is located on the southwest side of Nusa Penida Island and is one of the most famous dive and snorkeling sites in Bali.
What is the difference between Manta Bay and Manta Point?
Manta Bay is closer to shore with calmer conditions — ideal for beginners and families. Manta Point 66 is farther offshore in open ocean and is the premier manta site, where manta rays gather year-round near a natural cleaning station. Both offer real manta encounters, but Manta Point typically delivers more consistent and up-close sightings with an 80–90% encounter rate.
Are manta ray sightings guaranteed?
No. Manta rays are wild animals and sightings cannot be guaranteed. However, both Manta Point and Manta Bay are active natural cleaning stations that manta rays visit year-round, giving guests consistently high chances — approximately 70% at Manta Bay and 90% at Manta Point. Route selection always depends on daily sea conditions and wildlife activity.
How big are the manta rays at Manta Point Nusa Penida?
The manta rays at Manta Point are reef mantas (Mobula alfredi), with wingspans averaging 3 to 5 metres. Some individuals can reach up to 5.5 metres across. Despite their impressive size, they are completely harmless and move with extraordinary grace underwater.
When is the best time to snorkel with manta rays in Nusa Penida?
Manta ray snorkeling is available year-round in Nusa Penida. The best visibility and calmest seas are usually between April and November. Morning departures between 08:30 and 09:30 are generally recommended for calmer sea conditions and better underwater visibility. The best specific route is always confirmed based on daily conditions closer to departure.
What is the best time of day to snorkel with manta rays?
Morning is generally the best time of day for manta ray snorkeling in Nusa Penida. Early departures, typically between 08:30 and 09:30, offer the calmest sea conditions, best light for underwater visibility, and higher chances of manta encounters before midday currents pick up. Afternoon departures at 14:00 are also available and can offer good conditions on calm days.
What marine life can I see besides manta rays?
Nusa Penida's waters are incredibly rich. Besides manta rays, guests commonly encounter sea turtles, dolphins (often spotted at the surface between stops), tropical reef fish, moray eels, octopus, reef sharks, and vibrant coral gardens at Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay. During July to October, the rare oceanic sunfish (Mola Mola) can occasionally be spotted at Crystal Bay in deeper waters.
Safety & Suitability
Is it safe to snorkel with manta rays?
Yes, absolutely. Manta rays are gentle, filter-feeding animals with no stingers or teeth — they pose no threat to snorkelers. All trips include in-water guide support and life jackets. Guests should follow guide instructions, maintain a respectful distance, and never touch manta rays or coral.
Is manta ray snorkeling in Nusa Penida ethical and safe for the animals?
Yes, when done responsibly. We follow strict no-touch and safe-distance guidelines for all manta encounters. Every guest receives a full briefing on responsible marine behaviour before entering the water. Our guides actively enforce no-touch rules throughout every trip. We do not permit touching manta rays, standing on coral, or using flash photography underwater. Our policy is designed to protect the manta ray population of Nusa Penida for future generations.
Can I snorkel with manta rays if I cannot swim well?
Yes. Life jackets and flotation devices are provided for all guests who need them, and our certified guides enter the water alongside you throughout the trip. You can observe the mantas from the surface while floating comfortably. Please inform our team about your swimming level when booking so we can provide extra support.
Is this snorkeling trip suitable for beginners?
Yes. Beginner-friendly packages are available with life jackets, snorkeling equipment, and in-water guide support throughout. No prior snorkeling experience is required. The Manta Bay route is especially well-suited for beginners due to its calmer, more sheltered conditions.
Do I need to be an experienced swimmer?
No. Many guests join as beginners. Life jackets and in-water guide support are provided throughout the trip. A basic level of water comfort is helpful, but prior snorkeling experience is not required. Guests should inform the team of any concerns before departure.
Can children join the snorkeling trip?
Of course. Our snorkeling tours are family-friendly and beginner-friendly. Children are welcome with proper supervision and appropriately sized safety equipment. The Manta Bay route with its calmer water is generally recommended for families with young kids. Please let us know the ages of young participants when booking so we can prepare the right gear.
What's Included
What is included in the snorkeling trip?
Packages generally include the boat trip, in-water guide support, snorkel mask, fins, life jacket, and underwater photos. You do not need to bring your own snorkeling gear. Optional transfers from Bali, Nusa Penida, or Nusa Lembongan can be added depending on your location and selected package.
How many snorkeling spots are included in the trip?
Most packages include 3 to 4 snorkeling spots. A typical itinerary covers Manta Point or Manta Bay for manta encounters, plus additional reef stops such as Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay, or Wall Point, depending on the selected package and sea conditions on the day. Your captain may adjust the route to ensure the best experience.
Are underwater photos included?
Yes. Underwater photos and GoPro footage taken by the guide are included in the snorkeling packages and sent to guests after the trip. It is the perfect way to capture your manta ray moment without worrying about your own camera in the water.
What should I bring for snorkeling?
Bring your swimwear, towel, reef-safe sunscreen, and a waterproof camera if you have one. All snorkeling gear — mask, fins, and snorkel — is provided. A rash guard is recommended for sun protection and occasional jellyfish. A dry bag for personal items and a hat for the boat ride are also useful.
Booking & Private Options
Can I book a private snorkeling boat for my group?
Yes. Private boat packages are available for couples, families, and private groups who want an exclusive snorkeling experience with flexible timing. You control the itinerary, pace, and group size for a fully personalized experience. Private boats are available for both the Manta Bay and Manta Point 66 routes.
Do I need to book in advance?
We strongly recommend booking in advance, especially during peak season (June–August and December–January) when spots fill up quickly. Advance booking ensures your preferred date, boat type, and group size. Last-minute bookings may be possible depending on availability — contact us via WhatsApp to check.
Is there a 100% manta ray guarantee?
No. Manta rays are wild animals, and sightings are never guaranteed. However, the chances are approximately 70% at Manta Bay and 90% at Manta Point. Sea conditions and wildlife activity change daily. Our experienced captains monitor the sites and adjust routes to maximize your chances every trip.
How many people are in one boat for snorkeling activities?
Group sizes vary by season. During low season, shared boats typically carry 10–15 people. In peak season, group sizes may increase to 20–25+ people per shared boat. Private charters are available if you prefer a more exclusive experience with your own group.

Great experience! They took us from the port to four areas where we saw a manta ray, dolphins on the surface as we moved along, a sea turtle, and countless different fish and corals. The guides told us what we were going to see, helped us see everything, and made jokes that made the trips enjoyable.

The organization of these guys is top notch. There were 4 spots, we saw both a manta ray and a turtle. The organizers had bread with them to feed the fish. The photos and videos from snorkeling turned out really cool.
